China has many traditional performing arts, but they can be broadly divided into two types: Beijing Opera and Sichuan Opera. Face-changing belongs to Sichuan Opera, and due to its popularity, it is now performed independently. Face-changing involves changing into over 10 masks in an instant, with each mask having a meaning and representing a man, woman, or animal god. The performer also expresses movements and emotions according to the mask. The mechanism behind the face-changing is kept secret and is designated as a national intangible cultural asset of China. The face-changing artists who perform Honda Face-Changing are members of the Japan-China Sichuan Opera Face-Changing Association and Kuran.
