[Event Report] Nagasaki Stadium City Kabuki Dance Special Performance

Nagasaki Stadium City Kabuki Dance Special Performance was held at Nagasaki Stadium City Happiness Arena. We will provide you with an official report of the first performance (Sat) July 26th.

Program

1) Greetings and explanations

First, Ainosuke Kataoka gave a speech on behalf of the performers. In order to convey the appeal of Kabuki dance, Tanesuke Nakamura introduced the work and explained its highlights.

2) Price tag attached to base of grass skirt

富士山の背景に梅の吊り枝という華やかな舞台面と、荒事の五郎(尾上右近)、女方の舞鶴(中村壱太郎)という対照的な役柄が様式美を盛り上げる。工藤祐経を父の敵と狙う曽我五郎が鎧を手に駆け出そうとするのを、舞鶴が草摺に手を掛けて止める。互いに草摺を引き合う荒事の勇ましさを見せるが、「〽とめてとまらぬな……」から今度は二人の軽妙な踊りになり、力強い荒事から、廓遊びの様子に一転する洒落っ気が見どころ。再び力比べになり、錦絵のような見得で幕となる。

Along with the heroic acting, the play also incorporated popular songs of the time, drawing the attention of the audience as a highly polished production that combined classic elements with modern themes.

3) Spider thread Azusa string

The general of the Genji clan, Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Nakamura Ichitaro), was possessed by a spirit and lay down. His retainers, Usui Sadamitsu (Onoue Ukon) and Sakata Kinji (Nakamura Tanenosuke), were on watch all night, but when sleepiness attacked them, a page called Kanmaru (Kataoka Ainosuke) appeared with tea. When the two tried to slash away his suspicious movements, he suddenly disappeared. After that, the drummers Aihei and Zatō Matsuichi (both Kataoka Ainosuke) appeared, but when they tried to capture him, he disappeared. The two speculated that it might be the work of the Tsuchigumo of Mount Katsuragi. Furthermore, the courtesan Usugumo Tayu (Kataoka Ainosuke) visited Yorimitsu's bedroom, but suddenly revealed her true nature and tried to attack Yorimitsu. Then Yorimitsu chased the spider spirit, which had retreated due to the power of the precious sword Kumokirimaru, and headed to its home...

It is a transformation dance based on the legend of Minamoto no Yorimitsu's slaying of the earth spider, and a major highlight of the performance was Kataoka Ainosuke's rapid transformation into five different roles all by himself.
