    one. Puppet Sanbaso Puppet Sanbaso

    Sanbaso Tanenosuke Nakamura
    Guardian Chojuro Nakamura

The Sanbaso puppet is taken out of its wooden box. As the guardian skillfully manipulates the strings, the wobbly Sanbaso begins to dance lightly. The Sanbaso dances in rhythm to the music, but eventually the strings become tangled, it starts to spin around, and finally the strings break and it falls over...
This piece is based on the Noh play "Okina," and features string puppets performing the Sanbaso dance. It's a fun dance in which the Sanbaso puppets, who pray for a bountiful harvest, appear to be controlled by strings.

    two. Sagi Musume Sad girl

    The Heron Spirit Nakamura Tsubadama

A girl in a pure white wedding kimono stands by the water as snow falls gently. Carrying a snake-eye umbrella, the girl is a heron spirit who is troubled by her forbidden love with a human man, and she shows her bittersweet feelings of love one after another. The elation she felt when she was united with the man she loved eventually leads to a return of her delusions of love...
In a world of snow, the dance depicts various images of a woman lost in love, giving a fantastical portrayal of fleeting love. The final scene, with its intense and powerful dancing, is particularly impressive, making this a masterpiece of Nagauta dance, full of variety and scenery.

Kyogen performer UkonlaterThe Spirit of the Lion Ainosuke Kataoka
Kyogen master SakonlaterThe Lion Cub by Yasushi Fujima
The Pure Land Monk's Thoughts by Nakamura Tsubaki Tama
The Lotus Sutra Monk by Nakamura Tanenosuke

Kyogen performers Ukon and Sakon appear on the stone bridge of the sacred Mount Seiryo carrying hand lion dances. They dance to the origin of the stone bridge and the story of how a lion kicked its cub into the valley, only to raise the one that managed to climb back up on its own. As they play with peonies, the spirits of the mother lion and the baby lion appear...
This Nagauta dance is based on the Noh play "Stone Bridge." The first half depicts the strict yet warm love between a mother lion and her child, followed by a humorous interlude, "Sect Debate." In the second half, the lion spirit displays his heroic and magnificent movements.
